Water: The most important Future Natural Resource

The International Association of Hydrogeologists declared that “Groundwater will be the most important natural resource in the 21st Century”. Not Surface water, not rivers and lakes, but the hidden resource beneath our feet.

I often start my presentations in schools with the map of the World’s water, and where it is found. We might be on a Blue Planet, but once the saltwater and ice are removed, 97% of the accessible freshwater is beneath our feet. This comes as a surprise to many who immediately think of rivers and dams and lakes when thinking of water supply.

We have a vital role as Good Ancestors to reshape the understanding of where our future water resources are found, so they can be properly managed and appreciated.

It also explains why I am passionately opposed to more dams. Not only do they “kill” living river systems, but they remove the focus on proper management of the real resource, Groundwater. I know there is a place for reservoirs in the overall scheme of things, but often, what is not seen is ignored and overlooked.

We travel to Zimbabwe in 7 days, and will visit a dozen locations where TZABA has supported new boreholes to be drilled, and pumps and solar arrays installed. It is a privilege as always to meet the communities and schools at these sites, and to hear the benefits these boreholes bring.

As always, I will bring the prayers and greetings from all the TZABA donors and supporters. And of course, we will celebrate the abundance and the blessings that arises with this Gift of Groundwater from the Earth - and give thanks.
